Twitter

Again for the 6th time in only a few weeks the PC Government has shut down debate on different bills the most recent… the budget.  And in today economic situation you would think a good debate would be in order.  But no, the majority government thought different and NDP leader Pat Martin decided (who is known for not being quiet) to take it to Twitter …

Screen_shot_2011-11-18_at_11.50.08_AM

CTV News thought at first his account had been hacked but then realized after some of his responses to tweets…

Screen_shot_2011-11-18_at_11.51.01_AM

Even CBC News ran an article… MP Pat Martin unapologetic for F-bomb tweets

Pat Martin said. "People don't realize that that was the budget that they moved closure on. The single most important thing we do is give oversight to government spending and we're denied even that,"

Over night Pat Martin’s twitter account has doubled in followers and has sparked a new way of debate for Canadian Government.  Leaders in the Social Media community are calling this a HUGE step forward for Social Media in Canadian government and giving the people a true voice.

Will @PatMartinMP spark a new debate?   Ashton Kutcher made a tweet about Joe Paterno before he new all the facts and later tried to fix it.  His tweets have now been taken off of Twitter but with millions of followers Ashton has realized the effect of not having proper monitoring of his account before tweets are sent. He has now hired a manager of his twitter account.  After years of stating he would never do that and that all his tweets are his own.

Is this type of change going to happen to our members of Parliament? They have the power to reach the entire country and get direct results on different debates.

We have Canadian solders dying around the world giving people rights and freedoms; including the freedom of speech.  I personally think Pat Martin is exactly who we need in government and if he was in my riding I was definitely vote for him!

What do you think?

Lynne Conrad…. Excited about where twitter takes us!!

Your Future Twitter Followers on Google?

Written by Erin Tillotson
So I watching more social media videos this weekend, I mean what better thing to do when I have 5 free minutes right? HA! And I learned a really neat trick with Google search that I just have to share. I recently wrote an article in our newsletter on my top, easy ways to find targeted Twitter followers, and this is a great addition to those.

These two search terms will search in the Twitter bio and user name/real name areas, so this is great targeting.

Google-SearchThe 1st search term is:
intitle:"entrepreneur* on twitter" site:twitter.com

This search will show results based on the users title (user name or real name). So with your search simply replace entrepreneur with your key term.

The 2nd search term is:
intext:"bio * entrepreneur" site:twitter.com

The search will show results based on the users bio text.

The results of these searches will be different so be sure to do both searches. And don't just do this once. There are new people and businesses joining Twitter all the time.

Do you have specialized Google search terms you use? Please share them with us below in the comments, I love new Google searches! :)

Have a wonderful week, if you have any questions be sure to catch us over on Facebook.

Censorship on Twitter

Written by Lynne Conrad

Monday night was the Canadian Election and a country witness history being made. Not because we made history and now have a totally different country but because of the use of social media during the election. Primarily Twitter.

Because of time zones Atlantic Canada (Where I’m from) closes it’s polls 4 hours before Alberta and British Columbia. So what they do is a media blackout for the west. They don’t want to influence the vote in any way.

But what they forgot was social media in their media blackout, mainly Twitter. It became a huge deal during the first hour of closing the polls in Atlantic Canada. The media black out on TV didn’t stop people from posting the results.

Twitter had no choice but to take action. They censored posts…
Screen_shot_2011-05-03_at_12.37.16_AM

And the website/hashtag tweetertheresults shut down until the polls closed in BC.

Screen_shot_2011-05-03_at_1.29.47_AM

What does this mean?

It means that there are enough people on twitter to effect the election of an entire Country. Twitter is being viewed as a viable media source and if you’re not on it… you should be.

I know I sound like I’m just pushing my product. But the reality is you have to keep up with where your customers are… and they are on twitter. You can effectively use twitter to gain more clients. It's not just about where you are and what you're doing, it can effectively be used to build your brand and gain new clients. If you need any help please let us know. You should also check out oneforty.com for small business toolkits and other apps for twitter.

Hope you have a GREAT week

Lynne

Twitter Testimonials

Written by Erin Tillotson
If you are using Twitter then I'm sure you are receiving feedback from your connections. Here is a great idea for you! Once you receive positive feedback from a Twitter connection you can us that as a testimonial!

One way to easily do this is to add that Tweet to your favorites on Twitter. Then any time you receive a compliment on Twitter do this. If you have a client looking for testimonials you can show them all these as well as any other testimonial videos, audios or text on your website.

twitterfavs

Another great idea is to embed Tweets on your testimonial page. There is a great tool called Blackbird Pie that does this easily for you.

Now get even more out of those Twitter testimonials!

What other ways do you use your Tweets to improve brand awareness and authority?

One of the top questions I hear from clients is "How do keep up with the social media interaction and posts?" Many people find that once you log onto the social sites the next thing you know you look at the clock and it's been over an hour! I have a quick easy sample schedule that you can use to make something that works for you and your business.

Daily (15 minutes)
Update your status
Check for RT (retweets) and @ replies (where people have mentioned you directly)
Review and comment on your connections updates
Review DM (Direct Messages) I recommend keeping your direct inbox clean, delete messages that do not need to be kept for furture reference.
Schedule a few updates to go out while you are away from your desk. For example, share a blog post, mention something about your services and link back to the appropriate page on your website, etc.

Weekly (30 minutes)
Research and invite new connections - set a goal for how many new connections would like to have each week
Answer or ask 2-3 questions per week
Post pertinent events

Monthly (1 hour)
Review connections, unfollow spammers and inactivies
Update profile when/as neccessary

So there is a simple Twitter schedule to get you strated :)

What would you add to this schedule?

How many Twitter accounts should I have?

Written by Lynne Conrad

This is a very debated question.  And depending on whom you talk to you will may get different answers.

But when you break it down…your friends and family are probably not interested in your business and your business contacts and probably not interested in your personal life.  That being said, yes it is recommended to have more than one account.

Your personal account should be just that personal.  You can use your own name, or a any name you would like your friends to call you.  Here is where you can talk about parties, friends, vacations, or everyday events.  This can be a place to vent or share news.

JUST REMEMBER… it is very hard for social sites to be set up with a security level that can completely protect your privacy.  The whole idea of these sites is that they are “social”.  That being said don’t ever tweet anything you don’t want everyone to see.  NEVER assume only your followers for someone you direct message will read it.

Now people who follow your business account expect you to talk about business.  Yes, you need to make it personal but not about you, personal about the business.  You also need to talk about what you do, share information about your industry and  start conversations.

PLEASE don’t sell, sell, sell on your twitter account. The more you spam the more you’ll loose followers. Few tips, be honest, link back to your website, post about your industry – find videos from other people, find articles leaders in your industry wrote etc.  TWEET  them.  Be a place where people want to go and read and re-tweet.

I’ll be honest it not easy having more than one account but I use Hootsuite.com and it really helps.  You should check it out

I enjoy comments.  Since this is a debated topic, let me know what your answer would be!

Have a GREAT Day
Lynne

Great example of how to connect on Twitter.

Written by Lynne Conrad

Like most people I suffer form Allergies.  It’s seems the older I get the more sensitive I become.  I’m now one of those “Sense Free” allergy people.  Trust me… I don’t like it.  I have a hard time walking down the laundry soap isle at the grocery store.  The smell from all the candles, dryer sheets, laundry soap etc is way too much for me.

Back to connecting on twitter.  This week my allergies got too much for me.  So I posted.

Screen_shot_2010-09-10_at_8.35.20_AM

I did get a few responses but the response from @DLawrenceBID sparked a small but very effective chain.

It’s this type of communication on Twitter that can increase your sales.

@AeriusCanada has a twitter account and they are using it to build loyalty and customers.  Their quick response got me to sign up for their community email, where they received my contact information, and information about my sinus issues and got me to try their product.

That is the power of Twitter.

Whether you like it or not, people will talk about you.  It’s better to be in the conversation then finding out about it second hand.

Reality is, this could have been a totally different conversation.  We could have easily said how much we hate Aerius.  Then @AeriusCanada would have had a great opportunity to address that and maybe turn us around on their product.

This was great customer service.

Now how did @AeriusCanada find me.  Easily.  In Tweet deck you can post a column about any word you like, such as Aerius, or you can use Twitter Alerts.  There are a few programs that are effective, just Google Twitter Alerts.  You can also use Google Alerts for Blogs, articles etc.  These are but a few examples you can use to track your business in social media.

One of the major questions that she addressed in her presentation was, "If my best leads and potential customers aren't on Twitter, why on earth should I be on Twitter?" Laura has concisely determined five "off-platform benefits" of Twitter, even if you aren't using it to communicate with leads and customers directly.
